Description:

The YWCA Downtown Center has been a home and safe space for women in need for nearly a century. Women come to the YWCA for a variety of reasons and with a variety of needs. Whatever the reason for a woman's stay, the program's goal is to provide affordable housing in a safe environment with supportive services that promote self-sufficiency without regard to race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.

General Information

Hours:

- Administrative Staff: Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Program is staffed 24/7

Intake Process:

Materials needed for intake are:
- Proof of income (two most recent paystubs from current employment, Social Security benefit letter, etc.),
- Negative TB Test, and
- Homeless Verification.

Intake (Step-by-Step)
1. The applicant must obtain and complete a YWCA Women's Housing Program application which is available in-person, by fax, or by mail.
2. The applicant must have an in-person interview with YWCA Women's Housing Program staff. If staff are unavailable when the applicant fills out application, she is responsible for calling the YWCA at 865-523-6126 to set up an appointment for an interview.
3. The applicant must provide proof of income (two most recent paystubs from current employment, Social Security benefit letter, etc.).
4. If the applicant does not have a current TB test, she can obtain it for free from the Knox County Health Department. Directions and hours can be provided by YWCA staff.
5. Following the interview, the applicant must submit proof of income and a TB test.

After the interview, if the applicant is accepted she will be added to the waitlist. The applicant is responsible for calling every day to check for availability and maintain a spot on the waiting list.

Program Fees:

- $140 Move-in ($60 first week, $60 last week, and $20 nonrefundable fee)
- $60/week (Sunday to Saturday)
- $5/month utilities fee

Languages:

Spanish translator services are available.

Eligibility:

To participate in the program, women must:
- be 18 years or older with no children in their care,
- complete an application form and have an in-person interview with YWCA Women's Housing Program staff,
- provide proof of income (two most recent paystubs from current employment, Social Security benefit letter, etc.)
- be committed to a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle,
- be able to tolerate a diverse population of women,
- show proof of a current TB test, and
- cannot be a violent offender.
